Newcastle United will unveil a new club crest for the first time in 38 years during their final home game of the 2026/27 season. The design, chosen by over 64% of 27,348 supporters in a poll, will be worn on a plain shirt for the match against Crystal Palace on May 23.

Chief executive David Hopkinson said the club spent more than two years consulting fans, who were clear in their feedback. "They told us to protect what we have, keep the elements we love, and do not start again," Hopkinson stated. The new badge aims to address flaws in the previous 1988 design, which was deemed too detailed for modern digital use, while honouring the club's heritage.

Crest debut and kit changes

Adidas will officially introduce the new crest on kits for the 2026/27 campaign. The May 23 home fixture is earmarked as its first on-pitch appearance. This change coincides with the discontinuation of the current barcode-pattern home shirt, which has been offered to members at a 25% discount due to lower-than-expected sales. The club has already launched its own merchandise featuring the new badge to generate direct revenue. Chief marketing officer Steven Taylor explained the process was driven by fan input. "With the view to deliver a crest for our team in the future but also delivers for the brief by the fans," Taylor said.

A major revamp of club imagery at St James' Park and the training ground will now follow. It is expected that Adidas's next Newcastle kit will feature a return to more traditional black and white stripes.

Current season context

The crest evolution comes as the team sits ninth in the Premier League with eight points from five games. Their recent form shows three wins, one draw, and one defeat from the last five outings. The team has scored 12 goals while conceding 9 in the league so far. Their next fixture is an away match against Aston Villa. Fans can also track the team's progress in the standings.

Chief executive David Hopkinson further elaborated on the consultation process, revealing the club received over 15,000 pieces of specific written feedback from supporters during the two-year period. This feedback directly informed the design brief given to the club's creative team. The final design, which retains the iconic magpie, shield, and Newcastle United text, was selected from several shortlisted options that all adhered to the fans' core mandate of evolution, not revolution.

The final home game of the 2026/27 season against Crystal Palace on May 23 will mark the historic first appearance of the new crest on a matchday shirt.
