Newcastle United's injury situation has improved ahead of Monday's Premier League trip to Coventry City, with Nico Gonzalez and Joelinton back in full training and Dan Burn also nearing a return. The availability of the trio offers a significant boost to manager Matthias Jaissle, whose squad was stretched thin before the international break.
Gonzalez and Joelinton, who have missed recent action with concussion and thigh issues respectively, have been training fully for the last fortnight and are pushing to start at the CBS Arena. There is also optimism that defender Dan Burn could be available for the first time this season, having stepped up his recovery. The club captain's return would present Jaissle with a decision in central defence, where Sven Botman's place may come under scrutiny.
Miley scare a precaution
A concern over Lewis Miley has also been allayed. The teenager's early departure from the England Under-21 camp was a precautionary measure, and he has since been cleared to train with the first team. Miley is expected to be in the squad for Coventry, though his best position remains a topic of discussion after he has filled in at right-back during other absences.
Not all news is positive, however. Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen is set for surgery on a hamstring injury sustained on international duty with France's Under-21s and will be out for a period. Anthony Elanga, Will Osula, Jacob Ramsey, Amar Dedic and Tino Livramento all continue to work on their recoveries from various issues, with Osula and Burn appearing closest to a comeback. The full extent of the squad will become clearer when the team sheet is released on Monday evening.
Selection decisions loom
The returning players create several selection puzzles for Jaissle. In attack, Bazoumana Toure will hope for more opportunities after making an impact off the bench and scoring in the Carabao Cup, especially with Jacob Murphy's form being inconsistent. In midfield, the return of Joelinton and the presence of Sean Steur makes minutes harder to come by for summer signing Aladji Bamba.
At the back, Burn's impending return as club captain makes him a strong candidate to start alongside Malick Thiaw, potentially displacing Botman. The Dutch defender has started every game this season but his performances have been mixed, continuing a trend from pre-season. Jaissle now has genuine options, with Fabian Schar also providing competition.
Newcastle have taken eight points from their first five Premier League games and advanced to the Carabao Cup last 16. The state of the squad is also detailed on the injuries list, which is being updated regularly.
