Alfie Harrison has completed a move to Scottish Premiership side Dundee, ending his two-year spell at Newcastle United without a competitive appearance. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has signed a short-term contract until January, with an option for a further extension.

Newcastle United confirmed Harrison's release three months ago, terminating a deal that had been set to run until the summer of 2026. The club had initially signed the Keighley-born player from Manchester City in February 2024 for an undisclosed fee, announcing his arrival on a contract until 2026.

Harrison’s Newcastle United spell

Harrison’s time at Newcastle was spent primarily with the Under-21s, where he recorded 15 assists in 41 Premier League 2 appearances. His only senior involvement came in pre-season and friendly matches, including starts in the Sela Weekender games against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid. He was handed his first senior start in a 1-0 friendly win over Stade Brestois 29 at St. James' Park in August 2024, but he never broke into Eddie Howe's matchday squad for a competitive fixture.

The midfielder began his career in Blackburn’s academy before moving to Manchester City at the age of 10. His permanent transfer to Newcastle at 18 was seen as a promising step, but first-team opportunities did not materialise.

Dundee confirm signing

Dundee confirmed the signing after Harrison impressed during a trial period, which included involvement in friendly matches during the recent international break. Manager Steven Pressley highlighted the player's potential role. "We think he’s a young player with great potential that can add competition to the squad, and we’re delighted to welcome Alfie on board," Pressley said.

Harrison himself expressed his satisfaction with the move. "I’ve loved every bit of my trial," he said. "From the first day I stepped into the building, it felt like the right atmosphere."

What happens next

Harrison will now aim to make his professional debut for Dundee, who sit fourth in the Scottish Premiership with ten points from seven games. Their next match is an away clash against Falkirk on Saturday, 10 October.

His former club, Newcastle United, are currently ninth in the Premier League with eight points from five matches. Eddie Howe's side, whose recent form reads WLWDW, next face an away trip to Coventry City on 12 October.
