Newcastle United have unveiled a new club crest for the first time since 1988, the result of a two-year consultation with over 27,000 supporters. The design modernises the iconic emblem to address visibility issues on digital platforms while preserving its core historical elements.

Chief executive David Hopkinson said the process was an enormous responsibility, driven by fan feedback that was clear from the start. Supporters did not want a complete redesign but a careful evolution of the existing badge they hold dear. More than 64% of the 27,348 eligible voters, including season ticket holders and members, selected the final design from a shortlist of three options.

Modernising a classic symbol

The club stated that the previous 38-year-old crest, while beloved, had become difficult to reproduce clearly on phone screens, in broadcast graphics, and on modern kits. The new version simplifies and sharpens key elements like the castle, the black and white shield, and the flanking hippocampi-mythological sea-horses that nod to the city's shipbuilding heritage. The demi-lion, pennon, and ribbon bearing the club's name have all been refined for greater clarity.

Hopkinson emphasised that every design decision was made within the boundaries set by the fans, who were given the final and decisive say. The new crest honours the club's origins in the city's coat of arms while aiming to become an iconic symbol for future generations of supporters worldwide.

Debut and implementation

The new crest will be worn for the first time on the pitch in Newcastle's final home game of the season against Crystal Palace in May. It will then be used permanently on all kits from the start of the 2027/28 campaign. The current badge will remain on shirts until the end of this season.

The unveiling comes as Eddie Howe's side sits 9th in the Premier League with 8 points from their opening five matches. Their recent form shows three wins, one draw, and one defeat from the last five outings. For a deeper look at the squad that will wear the new emblem, explore the current squad listings.
