Newcastle United's Under-21 defender Charlie McArthur has confirmed his time with the Magpies has come to an end in an emotional social media post. McArthur joined United from Kilmarnock during the summer of 2022 after he had been linked with moves to the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, and West Ham United prior to his move to Tyneside. The Scotland Youth international had made four senior appearances during the early months of his career in Scotland - but his introduction to life with the Magpies came as part of Newcastle's Under-18s as he appeared alongside the likes of Lewis Miley, Aidan Harris, and Ben Parkinson in the first three games of the 2022/23 season. McArthur stepped up to Under-21 level during the following campaign and marked his second-string debut with a goal in a thrilling 5-3 home win against Southampton. A first loan move of his career came during the second half of the 2024/25 season as McArthur worked under former Newcastle defender Mike Williamson and Manchester United legend Mark Hughes at Carlisle United. The centre-back continued to feature for United's Under-21s last season but spoke of his desire to experience more first-team football - and he got his wish with a second loan move to Scottish Championship club Airdrieonians, where he made 16 appearances and grabbed his first senior goals by finding the net against Greenock Morton and Ayr United. McArthur's Magpies contract has now come to an end and he paid tribute to the staff and players at Newcastle and described the Magpies as 'a special club' as he looks towards the next step in his career. The young Scottish defender said: 'As I move on to the next chapter in my career, I would like to say thank you to everyone at Newcastle United for the support, opportunities, and memories over the past four years. It has been a pleasure to be part of such a special club, and I am grateful to all the staff and players I have worked alongside. I wish everyone connected with NUFC all the very best of the future.'
