Premier League referees' chief Howard Webb has publicly supported the decision to show Newcastle United's Sven Botman a yellow card for his challenge on Aston Villa's Nicolas Jackson last weekend. Webb stated that while the 18th-minute tackle was a 'high-end reckless challenge', the on-field referee's call was correct and did not warrant a VAR intervention for a red card.
Speaking on Tuesday, Webb emphasized that video assistant referees should only step in when an official's decision is 'clearly wrong'. He said the referee retains 'ownership' of such calls and has 'a responsibility to ensure players' safety'. Webb also noted that 'robust tackling is part of the English game'.
The incident occurred during Newcastle's 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa, a result that left Eddie Howe's side 11th in the Premier League table with eight points from seven games, having recorded two wins, two draws, and three losses. The team is now 13 points behind the league leaders, Manchester City. This latest loss was Newcastle's second consecutive defeat, following a 4-1 loss at Coventry on Monday 12 October, and they have now conceded 14 goals while scoring 10 this season.
Botman's incident in context
Botman, the Dutch centre-back, was cautioned for the challenge on Villa striker Jackson in the first half at St James' Park. The match's only goal came from Johan Manzambi in the 36th minute, consigning Newcastle to a narrow defeat. The club's recent form shows two wins and three losses from their last five outings, a sequence of results that reads loss, loss, win, loss, win. Their recent results include a 2-1 win over Hull City on Saturday 19 September, a 4-1 loss at Leeds on Monday 14 September, and a 1-0 win at Millwall on Tuesday 8 September.
Webb's comments come amid a significant increase in VAR interventions this season. In the first seven rounds of Premier League fixtures, there have been 21 VAR checks, with nine of those deemed subjective decisions. At the same stage last season, there had been only three interventions, none of which were subjective.
Newcastle now turn their focus to a trip to face Crystal Palace on Sunday 25 October. Palace currently sit 14th in the standings, making it a key fixture for both sides in the bottom half of the table. The Magpies will be looking to end their two-game losing streak and improve on a goal difference of minus four.
