Shola Ameobi will launch the NE1 Newcastle Dragon Boat Race this weekend, a major community event raising funds for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. The former Newcastle United striker's involvement comes as the club sits ninth in the Premier League with eight points from five games.
"I'm looking forward to launching the race this weekend and supporting the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation," Ameobi said. The organiser, NE1 Ltd, aims to make this the biggest edition of the race yet, with entries having opened earlier this year.
Event Details and Activities
The dragon boat race takes place on the Tyne at Newcastle Quayside this Friday and Saturday, starting at 10.30am each morning. Teams of between 11 and 16 rowers will compete in championship races for a trophy. Alongside the racing, the event will feature family activities including arts and crafts, candyfloss stands, face-painting and bubble artists.
Race Schedule and Highlights
Alfie Joey will act as compere on Saturday, with a lion dance scheduled for 10.15am that morning. The event is expected to draw large crowds, continuing the club's community engagement during a season where they have won three of their last five league matches.
The race launches with Ameobi's support as Newcastle prepare for their next Premier League fixture away to Coventry on 12 October. The club's current form, with a recent 2-1 win over Hull City, provides a positive backdrop for this community initiative.
