Ross, who is 50, first joined the club's academy setup as Head of Coach Development in March 2023. He later transitioned to a strategic position managing club partnerships before being named Head of Football Strategy in July of the previous year.
Ross's background and responsibilities
Having previously managed Sunderland, Ross has focused on forging strategic links with other clubs and creating pathways for player development. In his most recent job, he managed the club's approach to player loans and established new football development programs domestically and internationally.
"I am excited to share that I have moved to the position of Assistant Sporting Director at Newcastle United Football Club," Ross said.
He had earlier characterized his role as Head of Football Strategy as a key leadership post intended to foster a unified sporting approach throughout the men's, women's, and academy setups.

Ross's advancement follows the departures of Head of Recruitment Steve Nickson, who became sporting director at Championship club Wrexham, and senior football executive Andy Howe. Andy Howe, who is the nephew of former head coach Eddie Howe, departed after the summer transfer period ended.
