Newcastle United's summer 2026 transfer window closed on Tuesday 1 September with a calculated net spend of approximately £35 million. The club conducted a total of 25 transfers, bringing in eight new players while seeing 17 departures.
The Magpies currently sit 7th in the Premier League table with four points from their opening two matches. They have scored four goals and conceded two, leaving them with a positive goal difference of two. Eddie Howe's side are just two points behind early leaders Manchester City.
Newcastle United made eight permanent signings before the deadline. The final arrival was Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille in a deal worth £55 million, which includes a guaranteed fee of £51 million plus potential add-ons. The other seven incoming players were Ewen Jaouen for £24.6 million, Bazoumana Toure for £43 million, Sean Steur for £23 million, Aladji Bamba for £35.5 million, Lukas Hornicek for £25.7 million, Amar Dedic for £29.5 million, and Nico Gonzalez for £52 million. The total outlay on these eight players reached £287.5 million.
All eight new signings are aged 24 or under. Their combined wages are expected to be substantially lower than the salaries saved from the players who left the club this summer.
The list of departures is extensive and includes several high-profile names. Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham Hotspur for £100 million, while Bruno Guimaraes moved to Arsenal for £75 million. Anthony Gordon's transfer to Barcelona was completed for £70 million.
Several players left upon the expiry of their contracts, including Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Matt Targett, and John Ruddy. Aaron Ramsdale's loan from the previous season ended, and he returned to Southampton. Loan moves were arranged for Nick Woltemade to Juventus, Odysseas Vlachodimos to Sevilla, and several younger players to clubs across Europe. The total value of outgoing transfers and loan fees was £252.8 million.
The ins and outs have had a major impact on the wage structure. It is fair to say that the ins and outs will have significantly reduced the wage bill to a decent degree. The savings from top earners are significant. The likes of Bruno, Tonali, Trippier and Gordon were amongst the very highest earners, with others such as Krafth, Targett, Ruddy etc also leaving.
Woltemade and Vlachodimos are having their full wages covered by Juventus and Sevilla respectively during their loan spells. This financial restructuring comes as the club prepares for its next Premier League fixture, an away match against Leeds United on 14 September. Leeds currently occupy 9th place in the standings.
