Newcastle United's eight summer signings have been ranked in a comprehensive list of all 154 Premier League arrivals. The Athletic compiled the rankings after the transfer window closed at 11pm on Tuesday 1 September 2026, assessing each move on cost-effectiveness, importance to the team, and positional need.
Newcastle's eight new players were spread throughout the 154-strong list. Amar Dedic, the all-action right flank player signed from Benfica, was the highest-ranked Magpie at 14th. Goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, who joined from Braga, followed closely at 15th. The club's other arrivals were Nico Gonzalez (34th), Bazoumana Toure (40th), Matias Fernandez-Pardo (42nd), Aladji Bamba (77th), Sean Steur (87th), and Ewen Jaouen (90th). The report excluded under-21 players from its analysis.
Emiliano Martinez's move from Aston Villa to Chelsea was ranked first in the entire Premier League. Bruno Guimaraes' transfer from Newcastle United to Arsenal placed second. Mamadou Sangare's switch from Lens to Brentford was third, with Elliot Anderson's move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City fourth and Bradley Barcola's transfer from PSG to Liverpool fifth. The 2026 summer window saw clubs spend a record £3.49billion, surpassing the previous high of £3.14billion set in 2025.
The Athletic said: "This is not a list ordered purely by ability, but also by cost-effectiveness, how important each new arrival will be to the team that has signed them, and whether they fill a dire and necessary need in a certain position." For Newcastle, the highest-rated arrivals addressed clear needs. Dedic has already provided three assists across competitions with his accurate crossing. Hornicek impressed with smart saves in a win at Tottenham. Gonzalez, a priority midfield target, recorded 94% pass accuracy and 12 line-breaking passes on his debut.
Newcastle sit 6th in the Premier League with four points from two games, two points behind leaders Manchester City. They have scored four goals and conceded two. The squad faces injury issues, with Dan Burn, Joelinton, and William Osula currently sidelined. This context makes the new arrivals vital. Fernandez-Pardo, 21, offers versatility wide left or up front after eight goals and five assists for Lille. Toure, a 20-year-old Ivorian, brings pace and counter-attacking ability from his nine assists for Hoffenheim.
The club also invested in future talent. Eighteen-year-old Sean Steur, an Ajax academy graduate, cost more than £20million. Twenty-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen kept 15 clean sheets in Ligue 2 last season. The Athletic noted: "Twenty-year-old giant Jaouen (6ft 6in) arrives as a promising, long-term prospect, as part of Newcastle's revamp of their goalkeeper department." Aladji Bamba, who made 18 league appearances for Monaco, adds defensive solidity with 9.1 duels won per 90 minutes.
