Newcastle United are focusing on recruitment after sanctioning their first sale of the summer, with Anthony Gordon completing his £69.3m move to Barcelona in the final days of May. The Magpies are now looking to strengthen their first-team squad, with a goalkeeper, centre-forward, attacking wide players and full-backs all on the list. Head coach Eddie Howe and sporting director Ross Wilson have several priorities when it comes to strengthening the first-team squad, with a goalkeeper, centre-forward, attacking wide players and full-backs all on the list. They have been linked with several box-to-box midfielders, with interest remaining high in United star Sandro Tonali. Much will depend on who leaves St James' Park in the coming weeks, but Newcastle will want to replace Gordon in the squad, and find a solution to their goalscoring problems. Newcastle United want teenage star Zadok Yohanna after getting the green light from PIF to join the race to win his signature. United have entered the race after Brighton got to an advanced stage in the transfer, but Newcastle are yet to place a formal bid, while there are also suggestions of Chelsea being keen on the right-winger. The 18-year-old would cost £20.7m with sources close to the player's agent confirming the late interest of United. Brighton remain in pole position but there could be a late hijack. Newcastle United's decision to hand Fabian Schar a new contract has thrown up an interesting battle at the heart of Eddie Howe's defence next season. After Malick Thiaw ended the season with 33 appearances in the Premier League - the most in Howe's team - it will be intriguing to see where Schar fits in next term. Like Thiaw, Schar is a right-footed centre-back who is a direct rival for one of the centre-back slots, along with the German international. It also drops a clue in terms of the positions Newcastle are trying to fill, with the centre-back area relatively well-stocked and the Magpies now able to focus on slots elsewhere. Schar's absence in the second half of the season meant that Howe's team picked itself defensively for long periods of the winter, with Sven Botman the preferred option on the left-hand side of the defensive rearguard when he was fit. Blyth battler Dan Burn will be pushing Botman hard again next season, but he remains in competition with Lewis Hall as left-back too. Schar's decision to stay also opens up the prospect of playing with a three-man defence and having wing-backs in certain games, if Newcastle opt to stray away from 4-3-3 or the 4-2-3-1 system they used in some of the last matches of the 2025/26 season.
