Sean Steur has admitted he is not yet capable of playing a full 90 minutes for Newcastle United. The 18-year-old midfielder, reflecting on his start to life in England, said his physical development remains a key area for improvement.
Steur expressed happiness with his move from Ajax and said he feels settled at the club. "I am happy. I can only look back on how everything has turned out with happiness," he said. He acknowledged the step up in quality in the Premier League, describing the football environment as "next level" and a valuable learning experience. "It is a very nice environment to be in and to learn from," he added.
Game time and development
Despite his adaptation, Steur was candid about his current physical limits. "I can't last ninety minutes yet. So it still needs to get better," he stated. This admission comes after he has been handed considerable first-team exposure by head coach Matthias Jaissle. Steur has been named on the teamsheet three times and has accumulated 291 minutes across seven total appearances this season, as Newcastle sit ninth in the Premier League with eight points from five games.
He has started two matches, against Manchester United and Hull City, and came off the bench in the other five. His longest stint on the pitch was 77 minutes in the 2-1 win over Hull City. The club identified the teenager's long-term potential when they signed him in the summer and are building him up gradually. His progress has been recognised with a recent call-up to the Netherlands Under-21 squad for their upcoming matches against Moldova and Sweden.
A former Ajax teammate, Jorthy Mokio, revealed he would have preferred Steur to stay in Amsterdam. Mokio said.
Steur continues his development within a squad that recorded a 2-1 win over Hull City in its last outing. The team's next challenge is an away trip to face Coventry City on 12 October. Fans can track the club's progress and upcoming schedule on the fixtures page, while the full squad list shows the young midfielder's place in the group. His aim is clear: to refine his fitness and earn more regular involvement as the season progresses.
