Juventus have reached an agreement to sign Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade on loan. The deal sees the 24-year-old German forward move to Serie A as Newcastle finalise their own incoming transfer business.
Newcastle currently sit 5th in the Premier League with four points from two games, having scored four goals and conceded two. They are just two points behind leaders Manchester City ahead of their next match, a home game against Bournemouth on 5 September.
Nick Woltemade joined Newcastle last summer in a club-record deal worth €75 million, with his contract running until 2031. He started brightly, scoring in four of his first five Premier League appearances. However, his form dipped in the second half of the season and he was no longer a guaranteed starter under former head coach Eddie Howe, who even experimented with using him in midfield. Woltemade was an unused substitute in this season's 2-2 draw with Liverpool and made only a brief 20-minute cameo in last season's 2-0 win at Tottenham.
Juventus were holding talks over a potential loan, and an agreement has now been found. In June, the club was not courting offers and expected him to stay for the summer, but the arrival of new head coach Matthias Jaissle and six other new signings has changed the landscape.
Head coach Matthias Jaissle is optimistic about the debut of new signing Nico Gonzalez against Tottenham this weekend. The 24-year-old Spanish midfielder joined from Manchester City in a deal that could rise to £52 million after making 41 appearances for City last season, mainly at right-back. He is expected to play in central midfield for Newcastle.
Other arrivals include defender Amar Dedic and forward Bazoumana Toure. Also, the club is finalising the signing of versatile forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille for €60 million. This flurry of activity follows the summer departure of head coach Eddie Howe and key players like Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, and Bruno Guimaraes. Newcastle travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this Saturday for a 5:30pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports. They will face former midfielder Sandro Tonali, who joined Spurs for a record £100 million and is set to start against his old club for the first time. Tottenham themselves have been busy, signing Omar Marmoush earlier in the week and seeing new arrival Savio score in a 5-1 cup win over Charlton.
Jaissle referenced a previous tactical success, saying, "It worked against Isak," when discussing plans for the match. Alexander Isak is a former Newcastle player. The Magpies will be looking to build on their solid start to the campaign, which you can analyse further via our stats hub.
Before his big-money transfer to Newcastle, Nick Woltemade impressed at Stuttgart, scoring 17 goals in 33 appearances during the 2024-25 season. He also shone on the international stage at the under-21 European Championship, netting six goals and providing three assists in just five matches. His pedigree is clear, but the loan to Juventus offers a chance to rediscover that form in a new environment.
Meanwhile, Juventus have also signed striker Randal Kolo Muani and Bosnian winger Kerim Alajbegovic this window, and their striker Jonathan David is in talks over a loan switch to Atletico Madrid. Newcastle's immediate focus returns to the Premier League and their fixture against 14th-placed Bournemouth at St James' Park next weekend.
