Newcastle United have completed the signing of Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim, with the 20-year-old Ivorian winger joining the Magpies in a €50m deal.
What happened?
Eddie Howe is hoping Toure will offer Newcastle United “something different” after the young winger completed his move from Hoffenheim.
Toure, who has just finished representing Ivory Coast at the World Cup, joins the Magpies after spending time playing on the left-hand side, but can also be positioned on the right flank.
Why it matters for Newcastle United
The signing of Toure is a significant one for Newcastle United, who are currently 12th in the Premier League with 49 points from 38 games, and 36 points behind leaders Arsenal.
Newcastle United have scored 53 goals this season, but have also conceded 55, resulting in a -2 goal difference.
What comes next?
Toure has been signed as a replacement for Anthony Gordon, who completed a £70m move to Barcelona last month, and becomes Newcastle’s second summer signing after goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen’s move from Reims was formally ratified last Wednesday.
“We're really pleased to have been able to bring Bazoumana to Newcastle United,” said Eddie Howe, the manager. “He has shown his ability to perform in a top European league during his time in Germany and has gained really good experience with his national team, especially at this summer's World Cup.”
Toure began his professional career with leading Ivorian side ASEC Mimosas, progressing through the club's academy before lifting the league title during his debut season in senior football.
The young winger featured 45 times in all competitions during his season-and-a-half in Germany, scoring five goals and registering nine assists in the last campaign as he helped Hoffenheim secure Europa League football with a fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga.
“I'm very, very happy to be here,” said Toure. “Newcastle is like a family, which will help me show my best on the pitch. I will give my best every single day for this shirt.”
The signing of Toure reflects the recruitment team’s attempts to shift their transfer policy towards the purchase of younger, less proven players with more scope to improve and develop within the club’s first-team set-up.
“We're delighted to welcome Bazoumana to Newcastle United,” said Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson. “At just 20 years old, he's already a hugely exciting young talent who has progressed year on year.”
With the new season approaching, Newcastle United will be looking to improve on their current league standing, and the signing of Toure could be a key factor in their success. As it stands, Newcastle United are 12th in the Premier League, with 49 points from 38 games, and will be looking to close the gap on the leaders in the upcoming season.
