Hundreds of Newcastle United fans gathered at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art over the weekend for an emotional public tribute to club legend Kevin Keegan. The free display opened on Saturday morning and ran until Sunday afternoon, drawing thousands of supporters to honour the former player and manager who passed away in July. The exhibition featured a centre-circle banner designed by fan group Wor Flags, constructed from more than 500 donated football shirts and handwritten messages. It also included a commemorative film celebrating Keegan's life and career, alongside shirts and mementoes left by fans outside St. James' Park following his death.

Newcastle United’s Chief Operating Officer said the tributes had touched millions, noting that over 52,000 fans united at the stadium to pay their respects during the season's opening fixture against Liverpool. The club and Liverpool came together that weekend to honour Keegan's legacy at both clubs. The Chief Operating Officer added that the club had been overwhelmed by the global reaction and that the Baltic Centre exhibition was a fitting, community-led tribute to a man who gave so much to the city.

Personal fan perspective

Local carer Beverley Smith, 50, from Mickley in Northumberland, attended the display. She said it was a very emotional experience. Smith, who has admired Keegan since she was a young girl and wore the number seven shirt playing football, earning the nickname 'Little Kevin Keegan', said he showed love for all Geordies and will always be part of Newcastle. Another fan, 62-year-old retired electrician Paul Johnson from Gateshead, described the atmosphere as one of collective pride and sadness, stating that Keegan's spirit of attacking football and passion defined an era for the club.

The tribute comes as Newcastle United handle a challenging Premier League season, sitting 12th in the league table with 11 points from eight games. Their recent form reads two wins and three defeats from their last five matches, including a 3-1 loss at Everton last Thursday. Dan Burn scored a late consolation in that defeat, with goals earlier from William Osula and Harvey Barnes securing a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace the previous Sunday. The team now prepares to host Everton at St. James' Park in their next fixture. The club's goal difference stands at minus two, having scored 12 and conceded 14 so far this campaign.
