Newcastle United have agreed a €40m deal with AS Monaco for France U20 midfielder Aladji Bamba, the club confirmed on Friday.
What’s the transfer about?
The Magpies and Monaco finalised terms for Bamba’s transfer on Thursday, with the 20-year-old set to fly to Tyneside for a medical and to put pen to paper on a long-term contract. The defensive midfielder, nominated for the Golden Boy award in 2025, made 18 Ligue 1 appearances for Monaco last season and also featured in the Champions League.
Bamba’s move comes as Newcastle look to bolster their midfield options after parting ways with Sandro Tonali in June. Bruno Guimarães remains a transfer target for Arsenal, with the Gunners still circling the Brazil international.
Why does this signing matter for Newcastle?
With the Premier League season just weeks away, Eddie Howe’s side sit 12th after 38 games, on 49 points and a goal difference of minus two. Five of those points came in the last two matches, a draw and a win, but the Magpies trail Arsenal by 36 points in the title race.
Bamba’s arrival adds depth and competition in midfield, where injuries and suspensions have disrupted Newcastle’s rhythm. The France youth international brings Champions League experience and a physical presence, traits Howe’s team has lacked since Tonali’s departure.
What happens next?
Bamba will complete his medical in Newcastle on Friday, with the paperwork expected to be signed by the weekend. The deal is understood to be structured over five years, tying him to the club until 2031.
Monaco had extended Bamba’s contract last autumn, but the lure of Premier League football proved too strong. His Monaco teammate Takumi Minamino, who joined Newcastle in January, could offer insights into life at St James’ Park.
League standing: Newcastle are 12th in the Premier League, with 49 points from 38 games, a goal difference of minus two and recent form of LWDWL.
