Newcastle United have signed defender Amar Dedic from Benfica for about £30m. The Bosnia-Herzegovina international has joined the club on a five-year deal after having a medical on Tyneside on Monday.

What does this signing mean for Newcastle United?

With the departure of veteran Kieran Trippier, Newcastle had been in the market for a new right-back, and Dedic's arrival fills this gap.

How will Dedic fit into the team?

Dedic has already experienced playing at St James' Park, having been part of the Benfica side that lost 3-0 to Newcastle in the Champions League last season. He will be hoping for a much happier experience if he lines up against Liverpool on Sunday. As of the final 2025 table, Newcastle United stood 12th in the Premier League with 49 points from 38 games, showing a recent form of LWDWL.

What's next for Newcastle United?

Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson has noted that Dedic is "incredibly hungry" to prove himself, and with his ability to offer cover at left-back, he will be a valuable addition to the squad. Dedic could quickly be called upon to feature in Newcastle's season opener at home to Liverpool on Sunday, especially since Tino Livramento is still recovering from a calf injury.
